Warning: Some quilters find paper piecing addicting.
When you see really sharp points in a quilt, it was probably made with paper piecing. It's a technique that is easy to learn, but you really do need to be shown. It's almost impossible to get from written instructions.
This is one of the few Lunch N Learns that you participate. If you could bring some glue stick (not for fabric, just regular) or pins, and fabric scissors, it would really help. See more pics by clicking....
Lunch and learns are only an hour on Thursdays at noon (and sometimes on a Saturday). You do not have to pre-register, just show up with $10 cash in your hand. After we see how many are there, we order sandwiches and I do the lecture/demo for that week. Then the lunch arrives and we sit and eat and ask questions about the topic, or any other quilting topic for that matter. You never know what you will learn.

It is suitable for anyone who is just starting out with a long arm quilting machine. We will cover how to load a quilt top correctly. You will learn how to set up a pantograph pattern, quilt a few rows, and then how to advance the quilt to continue on with the pantograph. We'll address questions as you have them. This is a demo-lecture class so bring a notebook. There will be some hands-on with several people to a machine. $50.

Applique', known as the A word to some, is really not that bad, especially if you do it the easy way. All you need are your kindergarten skills, but instead of glue, we trust you with the iron! Seriously, there are such cute and beautiful quilts that require some applique, it is a shame to cut out half the world of quilting becasue you never tried applique. This is one of the few lunch and learns that requires some audience participation. If you would bring some paper scissors, fabric scissors, a pen or pencil, and four pieces of scrap fabric about 3 inches square, and a few pins, it would be very helpful.
Lunch and learns are only an hour on Thursdays at noon. You do not have to pre-register, just show up with $10 cash in your hand. Diamonds are another one of those things that most people avoid. Get over it. Lone Stars and LeMoyne stars both require diamonds and Y seams. Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts taught me how to do them a very unique way that works well. I'm also planning to show you a great quilt that Moda came out with about 6 years ago where the diamonds are 60 degree, not 45 degree. Of course, I found a way to make two of the hexagons at once. It shows up in Harriet Hargrave's new Year Four Quiltling Academy book.

| Lunch ’n’ Learn Beginner Applique - Sep 19, 2013
Applique', known as the A word to some, is really not that bad, especially if you do it the easy way. All you need are your kindergarten skills, but instead of glue, we trust you with the iron! Seriously, there are such cute and beautiful quilts that require some applique, it is a shame to cut out half the world of quilting becasue you never tried applique. This is one of the few lunch and learns that requires some audience participation. If you would bring some paper scissors, fabric scissors, a pen or pencil, and four pieces of scrap fabric about 3 inches square, and a few pins, it would be very helpful.
Lunch and learns are only an hour on Thursdays at noon. You do not have to pre-register, just show up with $10 cash in your hand. After we see how many are there, we order sandwiches from Pot Belly and I do the lecture/demo for that week. Then the lunch arrives and we sit and eat and ask questions about the topic, or any other quilting topic for that matter. You never know what you will learn.

I'm always surprised at how other quilt shops still teach new quilters how to "stitch in the ditch". What a waste of time. Free motion quilting is much more creative and fun. Give me an hour to show you all the "cheats" there are and I will also force you to sit down at one of our sewing machine and try it...you'll like it, and then the sky is the limit. This is the most popular lunch session, so come early with your $10 in hand. Lunch and learns are only an hour on Thursdays at noon. THis is about 48 inches square. I made up the pattern one year when I was sick of all the trees made up of half square triangles. you can bet this is easier. I put a lot of button holes in it, and am going to stick little lights from a string of lights through the holes.
